On Wednesday, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) denied shining its anti-corruption spotlight on Honourable Justice Ita Mbaba, who presided over the Court of Appeal’s Kano Division.
Wilson Uwujaren, the head of the EFCC’s media and publicity division, revealed this in a statement and denied some media claims that the judge was the subject of an inquiry.
“We want to reiterate that the EFCC is not looking into Hon. Justice Ita Mbaba in any way. The EFCC spokesman stated that the commission “holds the Judiciary in the utmost respect and will do nothing to embarrass any official of the court.”
He did acknowledge that agents from the organization had gone to the judge’s home on Sheik Yusuf Adam Game Street, which is off Race Cross Road in the Nassarawa Government Reservation Area of Kano.
Uwujaren claims that the visit was made as part of a property verification procedure rather than to question Justice Mbaba.
The EFCC spokesman continued, “The attention of the EFCC has been drawn to some reports on social media claiming that its operatives, in the Kano Zonal Command, “invaded” the residence of the Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Kano Division, Honourable Justice Ita Mbaba, located on Sheik Yusuf Adam Game street, off Race Cross Road, Nasarawa Government Reservation Area, Kano.
There is no truth, connection, or nexus with any investigation of the Honorable Justice of the Court of Appeal, although it is true that Commission personnel visited the property housing Justice Mbaba as part of a Property Verification exercise because of an ongoing matter involving the property’s owner. The information at hand demonstrated that Justice Mbaba is not the property’s owner and cannot, thus, be the focus of any Commission investigation.
