Former All Black Gibbes is replaced as Clermont coach by Urios

After less than two years in the position, Gibbes, 45, was fired on Monday with the team in 10th place in the league and only one win in their previous five games across all competitions.

After a shaky start to the season, Bordeaux-Begles fired Urios, 57, in November after he had guided them to the semi-finals the previous two seasons.

The former hooker, who helped Castres win the 2018 Top 14 championship, has a contract with Clermont through 2025.

Club president Jean-Michel Guillon stated in a statement, “After successful internal and external conversations over the past several days, we have unanimously concluded the arrival of Christophe Urios at Clermont is the appropriate choice.

His goals for the club and the game plan are exactly in line with our expectations, he continued.

The Stormers’ Champions Cup game against the Stormers this weekend will be Urios’ first game in command before the Top 14 trip to Lyon on January 28.

In order to maintain their chances of making the last 16, the three-time Champions Cup runners-up must at least earn a point in Cape Town.

Then, on February 4, Urios, who owns a vineyard and is well-known in France for his humorous media outbursts, will welcome his old team Castres before making his debut appearance at Bordeaux-Begles two weeks later.
