Lai Mohammed condemns the unrestrained use of social media during UNESCO Global MIL Week

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the minister of information and culture, has lamented the unchecked use of social media worldwide and emphasized the urgent need for everyone to be capable of critically analyzing and making judicious use of the information at their disposal.

The Minister made this statement on Monday in Abuja as she welcomed guests to the 24-31 October 2022 UNESCO Global Media and Information Literacy Week.

He stated, “I see the urgent need for every person to be trained with the ability to critically evaluate and properly use information at their disposal as I ponder the status of our world, the great challenge it faces, especially with unrestricted use of social media and other digital platforms.

Alhaji Mohammed said the theme of this year’s Global MIL Week, which is “Nurturing Trust: A Media and Information Literacy Imperative”, is not only apt but also timely as the world and its leaders contend with the challenge of identifying what is true and what is false, in view of the use of media and information.

I cordially welcome you to Nigeria as I implore you all to pay close attention, aware that the world is watching the outcome of this Global MIL Week. I invite you all to explore Abuja and have a good time while you’re here, the Minister remarked.

Additionally present at the welcome ceremony were Dr. Tawfik Jelassi, Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information at UNESCO, and Mrs. Lydia Shehu Jafiya, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture.

As I urge you all to give this your best attention, knowing that the world awaits the outcome of this Global MIL Week, I warmly welcome you to Nigeria. I encourage you all to discover Abuja and to enjoy your stay,” the Minister said.

The welcome ceremony was also attended by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, Mrs. Lydia Shehu Jafiya, and Dr Tawfik Jelassi, Assistant Director-General, Communication and Information, UNESCO.
