Lusail Stadium in Qatar achieves sustainability objectives

The Gulf Organization for Research & Development’s Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) has awarded Lusail Stadium, which will host the FIFA World CupTM final on December 18, a five-star grade (GORD).

The 80,000-seat facility has a lot of eco-friendly attributes, such as a cutting-edge roof and water-saving technologies. The “fanar” lantern, which represents the heyday of art and craftsmanship in the Arab and Islamic world, served as the basis for the stadium’s design, which was inspired by the interaction of light and shadow.

For GSAS Design & Build and GSAS Construction Management, Lusail received five-star ratings and a Class A* grade, respectively. The certificates were presented to executives from the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy on Monday during a special occasion. The SC delegation included Jassim Al Jaidah, Sustainability Communications Manager, Eng. Ghanim Al Kuwari, Deputy Director General for Technical Services, Eng. Bodour Al Meer, and Sustainability Executive Director.

Al Kuwari stated that “this acknowledgment from GORD is a crucial component of our FIFA World Cup journey.” “From the beginning, sustainability has been a key component of our plans since we are keen to build venues that benefit the local populations in Qatar long after the competition. We are honored to accept these accolades and pay respect to all those who contributed to the building of

The roof of Lusail Stadium, which is made of PTFE, is one of the stadium’s most notable sustainable features because it shields the building from warm winds, prevents dust from entering, lets in enough light for the pitch to grow, and provides shade to lessen the demand on the air conditioning system.

“We congratulate all our stakeholders and contractors for assisting us to obtain this great accolade, which is another another happy milestone in our FIFA World Cup sustainability journey,” Al Jaidah continued.

After Qatar 2022, a lot of civic facilities for the neighborhood are expected to be housed at Lusail Stadium. Any seats that are removed from the venue could be given to nations without adequate athletic facilities.

Qatar 2022, which runs from November 20 to December 18, will take place in eight stadiums. Each venue has a least four-star rating under the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS), which FIFA accepted as a sustainability assessment system and will guarantee that all tournament-related infrastructure complies with strict environmental criteria.

According to Dr. Yousef Alhorr, the founding chairman of GORD, “Lusail Stadium has established a new level in environmental excellence, guided by the SC’s sustainability policy, by meeting the stringent GSAS requirements. By successfully converting green construction ideas into useful practices, the SC has advanced climate action. This demonstrates the dedication to sustainability that has been evident at Lusail and other locations since before ground was broken.

Ten games will be held at Lusail Stadium throughout Qatar 2022, beginning on November 22 with Argentina vs. Saudi Arabia and concluding on December 18, which also happens to be Qatar National Day.
