Sweden’s defense minister’s visit to Turkey is canceled due to a protest permit

A planned anti-Turkey protest in Stockholm prompted Turkey to cancel the Swedish defense minister’s visit, the country claimed on Saturday.

We decided to cancel Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson’s planned trip to Turkey on January 27 because the trip has since lost all relevance. Hulusi Akar, the Turkish Minister of Defense, remarked.

The goal of the Swedish minister’s visit was to allay Ankara’s concerns over Sweden’s application to join NATO.

The right-wing extremist’s successful application for permission to demonstrate in front of the Turkish embassy in the Swedish capital later on Saturday has enraged Turkey.

Rasmus Paludan, a Danish-Swedish politician whose anti-Islamic acts triggered riots throughout Sweden last year, has stated that he intends to “burn the Koran,” the sacred book of Islam, at his protest on Saturday.

According to a diplomatic source, Turkey summoned Sweden’s ambassador on Friday to “condemn this provocative activity which is definitely a hate crime — in strongest terms.”

The ambassador of Sweden to Turkey has been called twice in more than a week.

He was asked to respond last week when a Kurdish organization in Stockholm broadcast a video showing President Recep Tayyip Erdogan swinging by his legs from a rope.

Sweden requires Turkey’s approval to join NATO, along with its neighbor Finland.

When both nations submitted applications to join the Western defense alliance last year in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, they ended decades of military non-alignment.

Any progress, according to Ankara, is contingent upon Sweden taking action to extradite those it suspects of supporting terrorism or being involved in the 2016 coup attempt against Erdogan.

Sweden, according to Turkey, has not taken sufficient action to crush Kurdish organizations that Ankara labels “terrorist.”
