A tanker that sank off the coast in April and caused a pollution alarm before it was discovered that its tanks were empty was cleared of all charges against its crew on Thursday in a Tunisian court.

A Georgian, four Turks, and two Azerbaijanis were among the seven crew members who had been detained since April, according to a court ruling in the southern port city of Gabes, spokesperson Mohamed Karray told AFP.

The prosecution declared that they would challenge the court’s ruling in court.

When the tanker Xelo capsized on April 16 in choppy waters off southern Tunisia’s coast, it was believed to be carrying 750 tonnes of diesel.

But afterwards, divers on an Italian naval ship that specialized in cleaning up marine pollutants discovered that its tanks were empty.
