Seun Kuti Challenges Media Bias in Afrobeats

Seun Kuti, a Grammy-nominated Afrobeats singer, has expressed anger with the music industry’s misattribution of successes.
Kuti pointed out that Burna Boy was wrongly attributed as the first Nigerian musician to perform at Coachella in 2020, despite the fact that Kuti had previously performed at the festival in 2012.

He also mentioned that his brother, Femi Kuti, had garnered numerous Grammy nominations before Burna Boy’s win for Best World Music Album.

Furthermore, Kuti stated that his record “Black Times” was nominated for Best World Music record, but was missed by African award organizers.

Despite his recent Grammy nomination for his contribution to Janelle Monae’s “Age of Pleasure,” Kuti stated that he was not recognized among the Nigerian artists nominated for the 66th Grammy Awards.

Kuti stated his dissatisfaction, claiming that the Nigerian media frequently ignores his successes, almost as if he were not Nigerian.

“My brother [Femi Kuti] has been nominated for many Grammys. They have nominated me, and I was also nominated in the previous edition. They [Nigerian media] did not mention my name among the Nigerian artists nominated for the 66th Grammys. That’s what they do every time, like if I were from Togo.

“That’s how they said Burna boy was the first Nigerian artiste to play in Coachella in 2020 where I’ve played in 2012 as if I’m from Togo,” Kuti vented.
