Ivory Coast has announced the evacuation of French troops, ending a decades-long military presence in the country. In January 2025, President Alassane Ouattara plans to transfer over the Port Bouët military installation to Ivorian forces. “We have decided on a coordinated and organized withdrawal of French forces,” Ouattara said reporters. France now has up to 600 soldiers stationed in the country.

This decision is consistent with similar actions taken by other West African countries, like Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, where anti-French sentiment has developed. France has faced military expulsions in 70% of African countries where it previously had a presence. Senegal and Chad, historically regarded as strong French friends, have just pulled out.

The move comes as France strives to reshape its military policy in Africa, substantially cutting personnel numbers. Meanwhile, countries such as Mali and Burkina Faso have appealed to Russia for military assistance, despite an increase in extremist attacks and civilian deaths.
