Authorities in Zimbabwe say Robert Mugabe Jr., 33, was stopped on Wednesday for driving the wrong way down a one-way street, where police allegedly found two sachets of cannabis in his possession. Five other suspects said to be linked to him were also arrested, reportedly carrying marijuana and ecstasy.

Mugabe’s lawyer has rejected the charges, arguing the drugs belonged to other passengers in a separate vehicle and accusing police of exaggerating the amount seized.

The case has drawn public attention due to Mugabe Jr.’s previous run-ins with the law. In 2023, he was arrested for allegedly vandalizing property and spitting at a police officer, though he later resolved the matter through an out-of-court settlement.

His late father, Robert Mugabe, ruled Zimbabwe for nearly four decades before being ousted in 2017. While the Mugabe family’s ties with President Emmerson Mnangagwa deteriorated after the ouster, Mugabe Jr. reconciled with the ruling Zanu-PF party in 2022 when he appeared at a rally
