Germany to Provide 100,000 Mpox Vaccinations to Africa
A government official said on Monday that Germany will contribute 100,000 doses of the mpox vaccine from its military reserves to assist contain the outbreak in Africa. The donation is intended to give the impacted nations emergency support.
Furthermore, the spokesman announced that Germany will provide financial support to the World Health Organization (WHO) through a number of channels in order to fight mpox and aid its African allies through the GAVI vaccine alliance.
Approximately 117,000 doses of the Jynneos vaccine, which Germany presently possesses and is being kept in storage by the military, were obtained in 2022.
A spokesman for the defense ministry stated that some of this material will be kept for the safety of officials going overseas. He also said that any choice about stock replenishment would be made independently.
Following an epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) that spread to neighboring countries, the WHO has declared mpox a worldwide public health emergency. The rapid propagation of clade Ib, a novel variant of the virus, has sparked concerns.
According to a spokesman for the foreign ministry, Germany is striving to accelerate the delivery of the vaccines to the most afflicted areas, which include mainly the DRC, Burundi, and other East African countries.
