General Abdel-Fattah Burhan, the head of Sudan’s armed forces, held a meeting with people and emergency personnel on Sunday at the scene of a dam collapse in the northeast of the nation.

Following intense rainfall in the region, the Arbaat Dam, located north of Port Sudan, broke, causing farmland and settlements downstream to be washed away.

The Red Sea state’s head of water resources, Amr Eissa Taher, stated that the damage was significant.

According to a local official, there could be at least 60 dead and many more missing, according to the Sudanese news site Al-Tagheer.

Resources have reportedly been sent to the area to assist those who have become stranded, according to the health ministry.

This latest tragedy has befallen Sudan, which has been devastated by conflict since the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces clashed in April of last year.

The violence has forced millions of people from their homes, and several areas in the nation have declared famine.

The severe weather will only make the food problem worse.

Since warfare engulfed Khartoum, Port Sudan—which had been the main source of water supply—has effectively taken over as the administrative capital.
