Workers in Abuja say the owner of a Chinese supermarket has fled

The facilities workers of an Abuja-based Chinese shop located at the China General Chamber of Commerce stated the supermarket’s owner had abandoned the premises.

The staff, largely Nigerians, confirmed this on Monday, when officials from the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) invaded the supermarket.

According to the workers, the supermarket’s owner, a Chinese lady named Cindy Liu Bei, escaped with her family on Monday morning at 8:26 a.m., as confirmed by the Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) camera.

FCCPC officials then closed the grocery.

Earlier on Sunday, Nigerians expressed fury over a discriminatory policy established by the Chinese supermarket, which limited admission to its inhabitants and prohibited Nigerians.

The building’s facility manager, Shaibu Sanusi, acknowledged that Nigerians from outside the complex cannot shop there, but Nigerians from within may.

While the supermarket remains closed, the consumer protection agency suspects that some customers are hiding inside to avoid confrontation with the agency.
