Breaking: Ogun Gov Abiodun Speaks on New Awujale Selection

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has called on the Awujale Chiefs-in-Council to provide a level playing ground for all contestants in the process of selecting the next Awujale of Ijebuland, stressing the importance of fairness, transparency, and respect for tradition.

The throne of the Awujale of Ijebuland became vacant on July 13, 2025, following the passing of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who reigned for over 65 years. After meeting with the Awujale Chiefs-in-Council in Iperu, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, stressed the importance of filling the vacancy promptly, noting that “nature abhors a vacuum.” He assured the people of Ijebuland that his administration would support any candidate presented by the kingmakers at the end of the selection process.

“The pathway to having in place a regency is the pathway to ensuring that all the i’s are dotted and t’s crossed, and to ensure that all the processes which are enshrined in the Laws of Ijebuland are strictly followed.

“I must say that all of us agreed that we are on the same page, and I think this will put paid to all the rumours that have been agog about one thing or another,” the governor stated.

He expressed the hope that the process would be rancour-free, as those who would be lining up for the exalted position would be given equal opportunity.

Governor Dapo Abiodun has praised members of the Awujale Chiefs-in-Council, describing them as “respectable personalities” who contributed to the peaceful and successful reign of the late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

Speaking after a meeting with the council, the governor noted that he deliberately waited for the 40-day mourning period to pass before engaging them. He commended the chiefs for their unity and dedication, stressing that contrary to rumours, the council remains intact and harmonious.

“This is my first meeting with them to commiserate on the passing of our revered monarch,” Abiodun said, adding: “I have absolute confidence in them. The council is intact, with no disharmony. They are working hand in glove with each other, and I thank them.”
