Atlanta Declares Special Annual Public Holiday To Honor Nigerian Music Icon Davido
Atlanta has created a unique yearly public holiday in honor of Nigerian music sensation Davido. The event will be observed every November 18 with the moniker ‘Davido Day,’ Naija News says.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens made the news at a press conference on Wednesday. Dickens stated that the city is honoring Davido for his contributions to Atlanta entertainment.
Davido, real name David Adeleke, is one of the most successful African performers of all time. He has received a BET Award, an MTV Europe Music Award, and a Headies Award, among others. He has also worked with some of the most well-known figures in the entertainment world.
Davido Day will be the first time that a city in the United States has established a public holiday to honor an African musician. The holiday is set to be a big deal in Atlanta, with concerts, parties, and other festivities taking place all across town.
The announcement comes after Davido headlined the A.W.A.Y Festival at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena.
Dickens, the Mayor of Atlanta, stated in a greeting to the musician on his birthday, November 21, 2023, that Davido has “captivated audiences worldwide, becoming a global icon in the music industry.” Thank you for your persistent work as a recognized singer, songwriter, producer, business leader, philanthropist, and community advocate on behalf of the City of Atlanta. You’ve received numerous awards throughout your outstanding career and continue to use your position to give back to communities in the United States and beyond Africa.”
The Atlanta City Council previously declared, “Be it resolved that we, the members of the Atlanta City Council, on behalf of the citizens of Atlanta, do hereby proclaim November 18, 2023, as Davido Day in the City of Atlanta.”
Meanwhile, Davido has been honored by the Fulton Council Board of Commissioners.
The Board of Commissioners has declared November 21st as “Davido Appreciation Day” in Fulton County, Georgia.
