Central African Republic: President Touadéra Declares Third-Term Candidacy

President Faustin-Archange Touadéra has officially announced his intention to seek a third term in the upcoming December 2025 elections.

His bid follows the 2023 constitutional referendum, which removed the two-term limit and extended the presidential mandate from five to seven years. The referendum, which authorities said passed with around 95% approval, was boycotted by much of the opposition.

Critics argue that the reforms pave the way for Touadéra to consolidate power, raising concerns about democratic backsliding in the Central African Republic. Supporters, however, view the changes as a step toward political stability and continuity.
