D’Tigress’s Victory in 2024 Olympics by Kalu & Okonkwo

The D’Tigress women’s basketball team from Nigeria, consisting of Ezinne Kalu and Amy Okonkwo, has shared how they won their opening match in the 2024 Olympic Women’s Basketball Tournament.

Ezinne Kalu, the point guard for D’Tigress, had a huge game on Monday, July 29, helping them secure a 75-62 victory against Australia in Group B.
The 12th-ranked Nigerian team surprised everyone by winning against the third-best team in the world, and it was their first Olympic victory in 20 years.

Strong defensive effort by D’Tigress contributed significantly to their great result by making Australia give up a lot of turnovers.

Ezinne Kalu praised the team’s tenacious defense after the game and warned their next opponents,

France and Canada claim that anytime they are on the court, they can “smell blood.”

“Our defense was relentless,” she declared. No one protects quite the way we do.

“We smell blood while we’re on the court. We are the best at defending, and that is what motivates us.
With their experienced players and a fantastic coach, Australia came out strong in the second half, but we didn’t let up and carried on.

“Whoa, this is significant for our nation. We were placed 12th [in the Power Rankings] going into this competition, and Australia was, I believe, third or fourth.

We declared today that we will not give up and that we will play basketball regardless of the nation in which we are playing.

As a family, we occasionally have arguments with our siblings, but we always work things out and become friends again the next day.

“We have been operating in that manner for the past few years. Today demonstrated our ability to work well as a team, something we have been attempting to do all along.

With 19 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals in the game, Ezinne Kalu demonstrated her extraordinary skill and leadership.

Rene Wakama, the team’s head coach, congratulated Ezinne Kalu for her outstanding play and expressed his enormous joy and excitement for the historic victory after the game.

“She sees what we don’t see in ourselves sometimes,” the coach remarked. We trust her, and she trusts us. Having someone who is so knowledgeable about the game and genuinely wants us to succeed is beneficial.

Amy Okonkwo, the team captain, gave a reflection on their hard-fought win while highlighting the group’s resiliency and solidarity in the face of difficulty.
