FG Proposes NIN Registration for Foreigners: Key Updates
President Bola Tinubu will present an executive bill to the National Assembly that seeks to alter the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC Act).
The bill proposes that everyone living in Nigeria, including foreigners, be registered and issued a National Identity Number (NIN) so that they can be taxed.
This is one of the economic stabilization legislation passed during the Federal Executive Council meeting on Monday.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, made the announcement while briefing State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa Abuja on Wednesday, along with O’tega Ogra, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Digital Strategy, Engagement, and Communications.
According to Onanuga, the economic stabilization bills, which number over twenty, include amendments to the Acts that established the Nigerian Port Authority and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
According to him, the two measures aim to ensure that transactions between the two agencies are paid for in naira.
He stated that the decision is part of Tinubu’s administration’s efforts to promote the national currency and lessen Nigeria’s economic dependence on the dollar.
The economic stabilization laws also include a Tertiary Education Amendment Bill 2024, which amends the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) Act.
According to Onanuga, if the new bill is passed, 30% of TETFUND’s income will be directed to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, with the remaining 5% used for TETFUND operations.
