Floods in South Africa have killed six people and left ten more missing

Six people were killed and ten were missing as floodwaters hit Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, on Christmas Eve.

According to the KZN Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, search and rescue teams that worked on Christmas Day to find the missing will restart their efforts on Tuesday.

“For the time being, we have six confirmed deaths and ten people still missing,” a provincial authority official told AFP on Tuesday, speaking on condition of anonymity, adding that the search had resumed.

According to the official, three bodies were discovered in a minibus carrying nine passengers; the remaining six are still missing.

One person was discovered deceased in a residence that had been devastated by the floodwaters. Two additional persons were inside and have yet to be found.

At least two more homeowners were discovered dead in their automobiles after being washed away by the floods.

On Tuesday, further heavy rain is anticipated in KwaZulu-Natal.
