Moghalu argues that Nigeria’s productivity levels cannot support a minimum wage of ₦494,000

Moghalu suggested a wage range of ₦75,000 to ₦100,000 in a post on X (previously Twitter) on Tuesday, just after the Organised Labour stopped its strike.

“In Nigeria’s national wage debates, we forget the most important point: the economy has little or no production. If we had a truly productive economy, there is no reason why we couldn’t have the kind of minimum wage that Labour seeks.

“But we can’t since the economy’s production level doesn’t allow for it. Remember that the minimum wage applies to more than simply government pay. Nigeria has no more than 2 million civil servants, with a maximum of 3 million.

It is also important to consider what is paid in the private sector, such as to domestic personnel.
“All of this is why, all things considered, including avoiding a minimum wage that multiplies already ravaging inflation (assuming such a wage can even be paid), I recommend a minimum wage of between N75,000 and N100,000.”
