Ogun Govt Shuts School Over Student’s Death
This followed the arrest and suspension of the teacher accused of being responsible for the student’s death last Friday as a result of corporal punishment.
Tamrat Onaolapo, the school’s principal, who was previously investigated for allowing physical punishment to be used on students in violation of state norms and regulations, has also been suspended.
Governor Dapo Abiodun directed the school’s closure, as well as the formation of a panel to probe the circumstances surrounding the terrible tragedy.
The governor has promised that those found accountable as a result of the probe will face the full force of the law.
State government representatives have also paid visits to the late student’s family.
The purpose of the visit was to offer condolences to the family and express the Ministry’s sadness for their loss, as well as to collect firsthand accounts of the occurrence for a comprehensive inquiry.
The team included the Director of the Ministry’s Secondary and Higher Education Department, the Principals General of the Egba and Yewa Divisions, the Zonal Education Officer, Imeko Afon, ANCOPPS members, the Ogun State President of the Trade Union Congress, and the Ogun State Chairman of ASSUS.
The Principals General of the Egba and Yewa Divisions, as well as the Director of Secondary and Higher Education,
who spoke during the visit expressed their profound sympathies while also pledging the state government’s assistance for the family during this difficult time.
The officials reassured the family that a comprehensive inquiry would be initiated to ascertain the facts of the situation and that accountability would be sought.
A condolence letter was delivered to the dead family’s representative, along with a cash donation of N500,000.
