The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Oludaisi Elemide, has urged the management of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) in the state to uphold professionalism, due diligence, and integrity in the discharge of their duties in order to promote a more prosperous Nigeria.
Elemide gave the charge while receiving the leadership of the Service, led by the State Comptroller, Olufunke Odusote, at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. The visit centered on addressing allegations of maltreatment of residents of border communities, particularly those of Egun descent, during the process of applying for Nigerian passports.
The Speaker commended the Service for improving the speed and transparency of passport issuance, while urging officials to remain committed, disciplined, and faithful in their service to the nation.
Earlier, in their contributions, the Deputy Speaker, Bolanle Ajayi, as well as Honourables Oluseun Adesanya, Babatunde Tella, and Wahab Haruna, commented on the manner in which some of the officials often handled immigration matters at the border communities, which often put some Nigerians at a disadvantage.
He stressed the need for the Immigration Service to devise a veritable means of distinguishing the Egun of Nigerian descent from their foreign counterparts to prevent granting the nation’s passport to foreigners.
