For his 74th birthday, ex-governor Peter Odili received a multimillion naira residence from Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike.
Between 1999 and 2007, when Wike was Chairman of the Obi Akpor Local Government Area, Odili led the oil-rich state.
Observing Odili Wike honored the former governor for the part he played in his rise to power at an event held by the Rivers State Government to mark the 74th birthday anniversary on Monday in Port Harcourt.
He claimed that Odili had previously informed him of the potential results of his ambition and had mentally prepared him for a potential betrayal by allies.
The governor of Rivers added that he was not startled by the developments in his political career since, before pursuing his goal to become Nigeria’s president, he had adequately planned for the worst-case scenario.
Wike noted that Odili is still one of Rivers’ best politicians and that he helped raise each member of the current governing class, adding that Nigeria lost out much by not having the former governor serve as president.
He characterized Odili as a true leader of men who helped many people, notably in Rivers State and across the nation, become political luminaries by grooming them and providing assistance.
There came a point when Dr. Odili was deserted by all political classes. This man sacrificed all to us. He was referred to by others as Mr. Donatus. Nothing but abuse was meted out to him. At the end of the day, everyone he tried to help support their families was a traitor, according to Wike.
“For us, we have used him as a school, and we thank him for allowing us to utilize him to study so that we won’t be stunned by whatever is going to happen,” they said.
Wike expressed his gratitude for the chance to have known Odili and honor him. He cited the numerous benefits and gains from the ex-political governor’s guidance that had enabled him to achieve his political goals.
