The Special Assistant to the Senate President on New Media, Olu Onemola, has resigned his appointment.
The resignation according to a Tweet by Onemola on his official handle @OnemolaOlu comes on the heels of controversy that his appointment has generated.
“Given the controversy that my appointment has generated, I would respectfully like to be excused from this national assignment,” his tweet read.
Onemola also in a letter addressed to the Senate President Ahmed Lawan commended the President of the Senate for the offer to continue to serve and promote the work of the 9th Senate.
He said he feels honoured to fill the role but due to the controversy generated he has to step down.
“A few days ago, I was asked to continue on in my role as the Special Assistant on New Media to his Excellency, the President of the 9thSenate.
“As an individual who prides myself in always setting a high standard and significant precedents – I feel honoured to have been asked to fill this vital role in the service of a great country.
“I thank you sir, for the offer to continue on to serve and promote the work of the 9th Senate of the Federal Republic – which I am sure is borne out of your patriotic desire to serve the Nigerian people
“However, at this time, given my antecedents and the controversy this has generated, I would respectfully like to be excused from taking up this national assignment.
“It is my hope that whoever does fill this role will build upon what we have started in terms of opening up the activities of the Nigerian Senate to the public”, Onemola’s resignation letter read in part.
He added that he has communicated his decision to the Chief of Staff, Babagana Muhammad Aji.
Onemola is one of the aides who served former Senate President, Bukola Saraki and re-appointed by Lawan.
Lawan had last week, appointed five former aides of his predecessor, Senator Saraki.
The appointments led to complaints from All Progressives Congress (APC) loyalists who argued that the appointees did not deserve such opportunities
