According to Ngelale, the new appointments came about as a result of Yusuf Bichi of the DSS and Ahmed Rufai of the NIA resigning.

In June 2023, Tinubu fired the heads of security agencies and the service chiefs, although he kept Bichi and Rufai.

Since entering the NIA in 1995, Mohammed, the new head of the agency, has had a distinguished career in the foreign service.
After serving in a variety of capacities, he was elevated to the position of Director and appointed as the leader of the Nigerian mission in Libya.

The 1990 Bayero University of Kano graduate had worked in the State House in Abuja, North Korea, Pakistan, and Sudan.

Before taking up his current role as DG of the DSS, Ajayi advanced through the ranks to become the Assistant Director-General of the Service.
He had held the position of State Director in Bauchi, Enugu, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Kogi at different points in time.

“President Tinubu anticipates that the two new security chiefs will work tirelessly to realign the two intelligence agencies for improved outcomes. He also gives them the task of applying their experience to address the security challenges facing the nation by collaborating more closely with sister agencies and operating in perfect harmony with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).”

Ngelale remarked, “The President wishes the outgoing Directors-General of the two crucial intelligence agencies success in their future endeavors and thanks them for their services to the nation.”
