Tragic News: Onyeka Onwenu Passes Away After Lagos Performance
On Tuesday night, tragedy struck when Onyeka Onwenu, Nigeria’s famed singer and songwriter, died shortly after playing at a birthday party in Lagos
The music superstar, fondly known as the ‘Elegant Stallion,’ reportedly collapsed at a private gathering before being pronounced dead at Reddington Hospital on Victoria Island, Lagos. Sources close to the family verified the startling news to The Guardian.
Onwenu joined the stage to play during the birthday party for Mrs Stella Okoli, the founder of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.According to eyewitnesses, she returned to her seat after her performance and slumped unexpectedly. Emergency services were immediately summoned, and she was taken to the hospital, where she was subsequently pronounced dead. The actual cause of death has yet to be confirmed.
A insider, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said, “It’s quite terrible. Onyeka Onwenu had just performed at Mrs. Stella Okoli of Emzor Pharmaceuticals’ birthday party this evening, and she slumped thereafter. She was brought to Reddington Hospital but did not make it.”
Onyeka Onwenu, born May 31, 1952, had a career spanning four decades.
She was an actress, journalist, and politician in addition to being a well-known singer and songwriter. Onwenu’s music, which combined genres like highlife, reggae, and pop, frequently addressed social and political themes.
