Xenophobia: Okonjo-Iweala reacts to attacks against Nigerians in South Africa

Former minister of finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has expressed sympathy and condolences to victims of the reported xenophobic attack against Nigerians in South Africa. In a tweet on her page, the former minister also condemned the attack on women and properties in South Africa. Okonjo-Iweala said “as Africans we are all brothers and sisters and it is my hope that we all live in peace.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the president of the Senate Ahmad Lawan also decried with serious concern the worsening Xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa. In a statement he issued on Tuesday, September 3, in Abuja, Lawan said that Nigeria has had enough of its citizens being targets of the attacks in the Southern African nation.

He said that Nigeria would no longer tolerate hate crimes in any form against its citizens who are doing legitimate businesses in South Africa. Similarly, Musiliudeen Akinremi, a Nigerian federal lawmaker, asks the federal government to recall Nigeria’s envoy to South Africa and close down the South African embassy in the country within the next 24 hours. Akinremi who is a member of House of Representatives, representing Ibadan North federal constituency, made the statement following the incessant attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.
