Zidane’s Son, Luca, Joins Algeria Squad for 2026 World Cup Qualifiers
In a symbolic blend of football heritage and national pride, Luca Zidane—the 27-year-old goalkeeper and son of French legend Zinédine Zidane—has earned his first call-up to the Algerian national team. The move strengthens Algeria’s squad as it pushes toward securing a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
FIFA approved Zidane’s switch of allegiance last month, allowing him to represent Algeria through his family’s Kabylie roots. Though he featured for France at youth level, he never played for the senior side, leaving him free to don the Algerian colors.
Coach Vladimir Petkovic has included Zidane among three goalkeepers named for decisive qualifiers against Somalia and Uganda. With Algeria leading its group, just one win from the final two fixtures will seal its return to the World Cup for the first time since 2014.
Currently with Spanish side Granada, Zidane brings experience from Real Madrid’s academy and La Liga. His inclusion adds depth to a team already on the brink of global competition, while carrying forward a family legacy.
