Tragic Loss: Millwall Goalkeeper Sarkic Passes Away at 26
Matija Sarkic, Millwall’s 26-year-old goalkeeper, died unexpectedly while on international duty with Montenegro.
The event happened in Budva, Montenegro, where Sarkic was vacationing during his international break.
Sarkic became gravely unwell on Saturday morning in a residence in Budva. Despite the prompt arrival of medical experts, he tragically died around 6:30 a.m. local time.
His unexpected demise came shortly after he played a full 90-minute encounter for Montenegro against Belgium just over a week ago.
Millwall Football Club has formally acknowledged Sarkic’s death with a poignant message on their website, expressing profound regret and devastation at the loss of their star.
It stated, “Sarkic, The Lions’ number one goalkeeper, has made 33 appearances for the club since joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers in August 2023.”
“A Montenegrin international, Matija has proudly represented his country on countless occasions.
“Everyone at the club expresses their love and sympathies to Matija’s family and friends during this extremely sad moment.
“The club will make no further comment at this time and asks that the privacy of Matija’s family is respected.”
Sarkic, who had a successful career with multiple English clubs, has received several tributes.
