A Serbian competitor died Thursday morning while competing in a CrossFit swimming tournament in Texas, the fitness organization announced on social media.
We are grieved by the death of Lazar Dukic. “Our hearts are with Lazar’s entire family, friends, and fellow athletes,” CrossFit wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Dukic, 28, slipped underneath and did not return during a swimming event Thursday morning at the CrossFit Games, an annual multi-day fitness competition featuring athletes from all over the world, according to local media.

CrossFit disclosed that it was “fully cooperating with authorities and doing everything we can to support the family at this time.”

Local media reported that the incident took place at Marine Creek Lake in Fort Worth, Texas.

Dukic was ranked third in Serbia and 88th internationally, according to his CrossFit page, which stated that he won this year’s European CrossFit semi-finals.

Events were canceled for the rest of Thursday, CrossFit announced on X, without stating if the competition would continue as planned through Sunday.
