Morocco Boosts Border Security with Ceuta on September 16
On Monday (September 16), dozens of security troops were sent to the Moroccan town of Fnideq, which borders the Spanish exclave of Ceuta.
Online messages in recent days have urged individuals to cross the border into Europe on Sunday.
Groups of people, particularly Moroccans of all ages and Sub-Saharan Africans, scattered after responding to social media summons.
Activists reported that several attempted to cross but were stopped by security troops stationed on land and sea along the border.
Migrants and refugees seeking a better life in Europe turned their attention to Ceuta and Melilla, two tiny Spanish colonies in North Africa bordering the Mediterranean.
Many people attempt to climb over the barbed wire walls that surround the autonomous cities or to approach the exiles via sea.
According to Moroccan authorities, almost 11,000 attempted migrations were stopped in the territory surrounding Ceuta last month.
