Tebboune Sworn in for Second Term as Algeria’s President
On Tuesday, Algeria’s president, Abdelmajid Tebboune, was sworn in for a second term at a ceremony at the People’s Palace on the capital’s west coast. It comes after the country’s constitutional court validated his electoral victory on Saturday.
According to the country’s election administration, Tebboune received 7.7 million ballots, representing 84.3 percent of the vote. It is much higher than his 2019 victory with 58% of the vote, when the election had an abstention percentage of slightly over 46%. However, the total is lower than this year’s initial result, which was challenged by two of Tebboune’s opponents.
Since taking office, the 78-year-old has faced criticism for his record on human rights.
According to Amnesty International, during his tenure, the country’s authorities’maintained its zero-tolerance stance to dissenting viewpoints’ and’repression of civic space’.
