Edo PDP Protests at INEC Office Over Election Results
On Wednesday, some members of Edo State’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) protested at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Benin City, the state capital.
The party supporters, who held placards and PDP symbols, demanded that the electoral umpire reverse the results of the state’s governorship election on September 21, 2024, which were declared a day later.
The demonstrators insisted that Asue Ighodalo, the PDP candidate, had won the poll, not Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress.
INEC had pronounced Okpebholo the victor of the polls. The APC candidate, 54, received 291,667 votes, defeating Ighodalo, who received 247,274 votes, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP), who finished third with 22,763 votes. Fourteen other candidates ran for the seat, but received less support than the three front-runners.
But Ighodalo and Akpata faulted the election, alleging vote buying by the APC, an allegation the winning party has denied.
Ighodalo has vowed to challenge the outcome of the poll.
