According to the US Geological Survey, an offshore earthquake measuring magnitude 6.4 struck close to Indonesia’s Java island on Friday, causing inhabitants of another city to evacuate their houses and shaking the nation’s capital, Jakarta.
The USGS reported that the earthquake, which occurred at roughly 3:52 p.m. local time (0852 GMT) near Bawean island off the northern coast of Java island, had a depth of about eight kilometers (five miles).
No damage or casualties were reported right away, and no local authorities issued a tsunami warning.
East Java Province felt the tremor more intensely, with the main city of Surabaya among them.
“When the earthquake happened, I was at home. We felt wobbly from the shock. “The water in the sewer (outside) was swaying,” an AFP reporter in the city, Yulianus Andre, reported.Along with our neighbors, my family and I hurriedly left our house. When we were outside, the shock continued for more than a minute.
Due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of severe seismic activity where tectonic plates meet that spans from Japan through Southeast Asia and throughout the Pacific basin, Indonesia, a large archipelago nation, is subject to regular earthquakes.
In Palu, Sulawesi, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake and its tsunami claimed more than 2,200 lives in 2018.
Furthermore, in 2004 the Aceh province was hit by a magnitude 9.1 earthquake that resulted in a tsunami and the deaths of over 170,000 people in Indonesia.
